Rummy is a game of skill where the goal is to form valid combinations using the cards in your hand. These combinations consist of sequences and sets. A valid declaration must include at least one pure sequence and one additional valid sequence or set.
Rummy is played using two standard decks of 52 cards each, including jokers. Every player receives 13 cards. A random card is selected as the wild joker for the game. One pile is used as the closed deck for drawing, and one card is placed face-up to form the discard pile.
A sequence is a group of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit (like 5♣, 6♣, 7♣). A pure sequence contains no jokers. A set is a group of three or four cards of the same rank but different suits (e.g., 8♠, 8♦, 8♥). Jokers can only be used in impure sequences and sets.
Each turn begins by drawing one card from either the closed deck or the open discard pile. After arranging your hand, you must discard one card into the discard pile. The game continues clockwise with players trying to form valid combinations.
Once a player forms the required sequences and sets, they can declare. The hand is then validated. A correct declaration ends the game, while an incorrect one results in a penalty. The winner earns 0 points, and others get penalty points based on their ungrouped cards.
Numbered cards carry their face value, and all face cards (J, Q, K, A) are worth 10 points. Jokers carry zero points. Players try to minimize the value of ungrouped cards in hand. In some variants like Points Rummy or Pool Rummy, scores decide the winner over multiple rounds.
If a player decides to drop out at the start, they get 20 points (first drop). Dropping in the middle of a round earns 40 points (middle drop). Invalid declarations may lead to 80 penalty points. Smart dropping can sometimes save you from big losses.
Always aim to complete a pure sequence first. Without it, any declaration will be invalid. Start forming this as soon as you receive your initial hand.
Keep an eye on what cards your opponents are picking and discarding. This can help you guess their strategy and avoid helping them by discarding key cards.
Save jokers for sets or impure sequences. Never use a joker in a pure sequence, as it invalidates your declaration. Use them where they add the most flexibility.
If your starting hand looks too weak, consider making a first drop. You’ll lose fewer points (typically 20) compared to risking an invalid or high-point hand.
Keep rearranging your cards throughout the game. This will help you spot new combinations and avoid confusion during a final declaration.
Make sure you’ve got at least one pure sequence and all required combinations before declaring. A premature or invalid declaration results in big penalties.
